SUMMARY:The Forgotten Woman
DESCRIPTION:Internationally renowned as a photographer\, Dilip Mehta was
working as the production designer on Water\, his sister's Oscar-nominat
ed feature about widows in 1930s India\, when he learned that 40 million
women lived in the same conditions today. Appalled\, he felt compelled
to make this powerful documentary that testifies to the contemporary rea
lities behind the historical fiction. The film opens in the ancient temp
le city of Vrindavan with striking images of thousands of widows living
in poverty. It then travels to rural villages to hear from women beginni
ng to organize for their rights and to New Delhi to listen to war widows
. In a country in which sophisticated urban lifestyles and ancient rural
traditions co-exist\, Mehta understands the power of light and composit
ion to tell a story and brings his photographer's eye to every frame of
this film. Although he claims no overt political agenda\, the stories an
d images he captures raise a powerful call for change. \n-Lynne Fernie

SUMMARY:Knowledge Is The Beginning - Daniel Barenboim And The West-Easter
 n Divan Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:For many years\, conductor and pianist Daniel Barenboim has w
orked towards reconciling Arabs and Israelis. Based on the notion that '
music is the language of peace\,' Barenboim and comparative literature p
rofessor Edward Said brought together Arab and Israeli musicians\, to pe
rform in Weimar on the 250th anniversary of the birth of Goethe. Also pa
rticipating in this bold experiment in 1999 was Yo-Yo Ma. The West-Easte
rn Divan Orchestra\, a name derived from a collection of poems by Goethe
\, today embraces eighty Arab and Israeli musicians aged thirteen to twe
nty-six. Director Paul Smaczny has followed the orchestra since its ince
ption. The film chronicles all five summer workshops in Weimar and Sevil
le\, Barenboim's visit to Ramallah and Jerusalem in May 2004 - during wh
ich he received the prestigious Wolf Prize at the Knesset - as well as t
he sensational concert in Ramallah in August 2005.

SUMMARY:Jackson
DESCRIPTION:'This is going to be the best day of your life!' Donald (Barr
y Primus) promises Sam (Charlie Robinson). This seems unlikely\, given t
hat both are homeless men mired in the bleak landscape of Los Angeles' S
kid Row. Moreover\, the source of Donald's optimism is a mere $20 bill (
a Jackson) which he skillfully bummed off a passing businessman (Steve G
uttenberg). But Donald vows that with it they can go anywhere and do any
thing and drags the reluctant Sam off in search of great adventure.JACKS
ON\, directed by J.F. Lawton\, spans a single day that turns into a cold
\, rainy night. Fueled by their 'ability to pay\,' not to mention bottle
s of Thunderbird\, Donald and Sam adventure through a world of humor\, p
hilosophy\, danger and hope. In the most unusual aspect of the film\, th
eir story is accented by other down-and-out characters who express thems
elves by singing some of the world's greatest opera arias. From an old d
runk (Richard Brown) singing a Donizetti duet with a crack addict (Shawn
ette Sulker)\, to a bag-lady (Ella Lee Romani) singing Carmen\, these su
rreal musical sequences stand apart from\, but enrich Donald and Sam's j
ourney. What begins as a simple tale about the friendship of two bums be
comes a story about the beauty and resilience of the human spirit.

SUMMARY:Tribute: Stanley Tookie Williams\, 1953-2005
DESCRIPTION:This 66-minute film--TRIBUTE: Stanley Tookie Williams\, 1953-
2005--is a powerful documentary that examines death row prisoner\, Crips
gang co-founder\, children's book author and Nobel Peace Prize nominee
Stanley Tookie Williams. The international campaign for clemency to save
him from death by lethal injection ended on December 13\, 2005\, at 12:
35 a.m.\, when he was pronounced dead after clemency was denied by Calif
ornia Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. TRIBUTE includes scenes from a sta
ged reenactment of that execution. The reenactment--as well as TRIBUTE--
were produced and directed by writer Barbara Becnel and producer Shirley
Neal\, longtime friends of Stanley Tookie Williams. It was based on the
ir real-life experience at San Quentin's death chamber witnessing his bo
tched execution--it took him 35 minutes to die. The two women filmed the
staged reenactment\, enabling TRIBUTE to offer a very intimate view of
capital punishment. 'We created and staged a play that replicated the ex
ecution because we wanted people to see exactly what the State of Califo
rnia does in the middle of the night in the name of the people of the St
ate of California\,' explains Barbara Becnel. TRIBUTE includes provocati
ve eulogies by Snoop Dogg\, Tony Robbins and Louis Farrakhan--speaking a
t the memorial service of Stanley Tookie Williams--and never-before-seen
footage of his ashes scattered by Becnel and Neal in Soweto\, South Afr
ica. This was his last wish.

SUMMARY:Familiar Voices
DESCRIPTION:The horrific and systematic murder of nearly half a million p
eople ceases to be a distant reality in this film about the ongoing geno
cide in Darfur. Dramatic first-hand accounts are interwoven with expert
analysis of the devastating situation\, and international activists off
er insight into the tangible options available for affecting change. Th
ese are the voices of people in action ? voices that represent a call fo
r peace that is essential to the human spirit.UNICEF Ambassador\, activi
st and actress Mia Farrow shares moving accounts of her many visits to t
he refugee camps in Southern Darfur\, Eastern Chad\, and the Central Afr
ican Republic. Together with these riveting stories\, Professor Eric Re
eves ? a 10-year Sudan researcher and activist ? offers a clear analysis
of the political climate of the region ? while Darfurians\, ranging fro
m an award-winning human rights leader on the ground to activist leaders
in the U.S.\, paint a vivid picture of life in Darfur before and after
the conflict broke out. Nobel Peace Prize winners\, legislators\, commu
nity leaders\, international activists\, college students and fifth grad
ers all join together to speak for those who cannot sit in front of a ca
mera today to tell their stories. They clearly convey the complexity the
crisis\, guide the audience toward many available resources\, and invit
e them to act now. Like those of the leaders that came before them\, th
ese ?Familiar Voices? inspire\, empower\, and call to effective action a
  new anti-genocide generation.

SUMMARY:From The 50 Yard Line
DESCRIPTION:The film 'From the 50 Yard Line' presents the football field
not only as a sports venue but also as a stage for the marching band. Th
e viewer goes on an exciting adventure through band camp\, auditions\, t
he marching season\, and the regional and national competitions in 2006.
You see the great rewards of disciplined practice\, the overlooked tech
nical artistry of the group endeavor\, and the important life changing e
ffects of instrumental music education. Another layer delves into the mi
sconceptions about marching band\, showing band kids in a whole new ligh
 t. The primary vehicle to tell the story is the Centerville (Ohio) High
School marching band from suburban Dayton\, the former Grand National Ch
ampions. Recognizing that all bands\, big and small\, do amazing things\
, the film also portrays the band at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles\
, which has just recently started up again after being silenced for 18 y
ears due to music budget cuts. One wonders what music was lost forever d
uring the silent years at schools nationwide affected by cutbacks. This
film tells the memorable story of the importance of instrumental music
education\, complete with the never-before seen emotional aspects of the
experience. The students at the schools are wonderful subjects and thei
r personal stories genuine and compelling. Nowhere else do you see hundr
eds of teenagers working together in such unison and commitment for one
common goal. The film is part drama\, comedy\, music video\, reality sho
 w\, and full-on entertainment.

SUMMARY:The Price of Sugar
DESCRIPTION:As tourists flock to the pristine beaches of the Dominican Re
public\, little do they know that a few miles away thousands of disposse
ssed Haitians are under armed guard on plantations harvesting sugarcane\
, most of which ends up in US kitchens. Cutting cane by machete\, they w
 ork 14 hour days\, 7 days a week\, frequently without access to decent h
 ousing\, electricity\, clean water\, education\, healthcare or adequate
nutrition. The Price of Sugar follows a charismatic Spanish priest\, Fat
her Christopher Hartley\, as he organizes some of this hemisphere's poor
est people\, challenging the powerful interests profiting from their wor
 k. Narrated by Paul Newman\, the film is a disturbing\, emotionally rive
ting\, and a yet-optimistic look at this human rights atrocity and the h
uman cost of what we put sugar on our cereal.
